The Get Ben Riding Fireblade Giveaway is well underway, and in the latest video I finally get properly stuck into the mechanical work on this classic Honda CBR900RR Fireblade before it hits the road again.
If you haven’t seen Part 1 of the series yet, that’s the place to start. It explains where this Fireblade came from, why I bought it, and—most importantly—how you can enter to win it. The winner will be announced live on YouTube on 1st March at 8pm, so if you want to be in with a chance, make sure you’re following the series from the beginning.
Getting the Fireblade Mechanically Right
This episode is all about doing the jobs that actually matter on a 25-year-old superbike. No shortcuts, no bodges—just the sort of work I’d expect to see done before riding the bike myself.
In this video, I carry out:
Front and rear brake disc replacement
New brake pads front and rear
Full caliper strip, clean, and regrease
Front and rear wheel removal
Oil and filter service with fresh 10W-40
Chain adjustment and lubrication
Inspection of bearings, cush drive, and general condition
One of the positives with this bike is that, despite its age, it’s clearly been mechanically cared for in the past. Everything came apart as it should, the bearings look healthy, and many of the serviceable parts have been greased properly—exactly what you want to see on an older machine.
That said, the brakes were well past their best, and replacing the discs and pads is a huge step toward making the bike safe, enjoyable, and confidence-inspiring to ride.
Why This Work Matters
I’m not interested in giving away a bike that looks okay but hasn’t been gone through properly. The whole point of this giveaway is that the Fireblade should be something the winner can ride, enjoy, and continue improving—not a project that immediately needs undoing.
Before the bike is given away, it will:
Be fully serviced
Be road tested properly
Go through MOT prep
Be checked for electrical issues or overheating
Be compared back-to-back with a modern Fireblade
If I wouldn’t ride it myself, it doesn’t get given away. Simple as that.
What’s Coming Next in the Series
There’s plenty more Fireblade content on the way, including:
Electrical system and rectifier checks
Valve clearance inspection
Spark plugs and air filter
Final MOT preparation
First proper road test
Old Fireblade vs New Fireblade comparison ride
If you’re into classic superbikes, real-world maintenance, or just enjoy seeing older bikes kept alive properly, this series is very much for you.
